Hasbro’s Nerf has been making some of the best foam-based toy guns since the 1980s and their Prometheus MXVIII-20K is what stands out in their Rival product line. What makes it so? Read on and we’ll take a closer look — what it is like to use, quality and design, and more.
What’s it Like to Use?
Just carrying the Nerf Rival Prometheus MXVIII-20K in your hands can make you feel and look badass the way it is fired low by the waist like a heavy machine gun John J. Rambo style. That’s thanks to the handles situated atop the rear and front of the blaster. With that, it is really meant to be carried with both hands which makes firing very ergonomic and less tiring, especially with the included shoulder strap.
Out of the box, you’re getting the blaster, a rechargeable 9.6V NiMH battery with charger, 200 high-impact foam rounds, a detachable front handle, feet/stands, blue and red indicator flags, shoulder strap, and a manual.
To get started, simply attach the front handle and feet, insert the battery (charge for a few hours prior), fill the hopper, and fully close the hopper door (won’t fire otherwise). Now, all that’s left to do is find them targets and wreak havoc. Easy peasy!
Build Quality and Design
The Nerf Rival Prometheus MXVIII-20K is made of durable plastic and weighs 5 lbs (2.27 kg). Fairly heavy but as mentioned, the ambidextrous top handle design plus the shoulder strap nullify the weight.
Sprinting with it, therefore, is no problem. However, because it is operated low by the side, accuracy is out of the window. The top rear handle also features a battery light indicator — steady green for full, flashing red for low, and steady red for drained so no more guessing.
When it comes to performance, it boasts an Advanced Acceleration System that fires up to 8 rounds per second at an impressive 100 feet per second velocity. And while it comes with 200 foam rounds, the big hopper design can actually hold more — less reloading, and more blasting.
Final Thoughts
Overall, the Nerf Rival Prometheus MXVIII-20K is a well-made foam ball blaster. Whether you’re looking forward to going beast mode in a Nerf battle or gifting that special someone who’s into big guns but you don’t want anybody getting hurt, then look no further than this Nerf masterpiece right here.
Now, fair warning… 25 seconds of going rampage could mean 25 minutes of going around picking up 200 foam balls afterward — patience is a virtue. Nevertheless, a smile on everyone’s face is totally worth it, don’t you think?
